Fabula Nova Crystallis

I know, I know, just when you thought it might not be possible for me to be more Asian, I bring up Final Fantasy. But the three games that will belong in the Final Fantasy Fabula Nova Crystallis collection (”New Tale of the Crystal” for those of us who find our Latin skills somewhat lacking) are something that every RPG-loving nerd can get on board for. The three titles, Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), Final Fantasy Versus XIII (PS3), and Final Fantasy Agito XIII (Mobile Phones), have garnered a lot of attention as of late, especially as XIII’s release date has been pushed back yet again, now expected in late 2008 or even early 2009. One plus side is that we are talking about a potential worldwide release, a first for our Japanese friends at Square Enix. Versus and Agito are to follow in late 2009 if all goes to plan, but we know it never does.

According to IGN, Square’s company-wide technology platform Crystal Tools (previously “White Engine”) has been fully utilized in XIII and Versus, and the platform is designed for use with 360, PS3, and PC gaming. This doesn’t change the fact, however, that both games are reserved exclusively for play on the PS3, so if you, like me, have yet to acquire one, factor that into the budget plan. I guess we know where my tax refund will be going.

Here are some of the few details we know about the game’s plot. The newest addition to the Final Fantasy Anthology centers on a mysterious girl named “Lightning.” Facts about the game that Square has released thus far involve a floating world called “Cocoon” and, as always, something to do with Crystals. Fans of PSone’s Final Fantasy VIII will be pleased to see the return of the gunblade, as well as many other tried-and-true Final Fantasy elements. With the release date still unconfirmed, there might just be enough time for you to journey back through Final Fantasies I - XII. You can see how the chain has progressed from its NES days to becoming one of the most prominent RPG-titles in all of Geekdom.
